How does diabetes affect feet?

If you have diabetes, it greatly increases your risk of developing complications that cause nerve damage or poor circulation.

What are the signs and symptoms?

Did you know that feet are often the first place to show diabetic related symptoms?

Symptoms may include:

  • Cold feet
  • Numbness
  • Leg pain after walking
  • Pins and needles
  • Changes in foot colour
  • Nail changes
  • Corns
  • Calluses
  • Cracked or dry skin

What can you do?

There are a number of steps that you can take to protect your feet if you have diabetes, these are:

  • Making sure your feet are clean and dry
  • Moisturising your feet everyday
  • Checking your feet to look for any changes in appearance
  • Keeping toenails trimmed
  • Seeing a podiatrist regularly
